DAVID LYNCH's MASTERPIECE: MULHOLLAND DRIVE

Oh boy!....

AN ATTEMPT TO VISUALISE A PERSON'S SPIRAL JOURNEY TO INSANITY

Where to start. This is an extremely complex movie! You cannot find a meaningful explanation to every scene in the movie, and there are scenes which are not related to the main plot whatsoever. But even if you don't understand jack at the end, it's still a hell of an acid trip. A Treat to all your senses (yes, all!). But here's what I understood about the movie and the meaning behind some scenes. Remember, I'm writing this review before reading about it's true meaning elsewhere. It's my first hand review.

It tries to portray the gritty reality of young actresses with dreams in the ruthless Hollywood industry. It does not make sense most of the time, That's David Lynch's M.O. But if you think and try to place the puzzles, you understand and feel the trauma crushed dreams bring. Since the industry is filled with drugs and sexuality, and the life from the artist's point of view is showed in a drowsy, trippy and sensual way.

Young artists with dreams are so invested in the dream, they cannot separate it from their reality and under the influence of drugs, they create their own world around them. The bright shiny lights of Hollywood blind them from seeing the reality.

I AM NOT GIVING AWAY ANY MORE DETAILS. BECAUSE I CAN'T EXPLAIN HALF OF THEM!

The whole movie is a audio-visual equivalent of an acid trip. Some scenes cannot be comprehended, some have no relation to the plot, but it all fits together to create this beautiful dark twisted fantasy world, which is a treat to all your senses.

It is an experience of a lifetime. Make sure you watch it in a theatre, or a really good home theatre setup. I'm sure you'll be confused, visually pleased and heartbroken all at the same time by the end.
